Black Tourmaline — Meaning & Properties

protection · grounding · EMF · shielding · absorption

Also called schorl, the most widely used protective and grounding stone in modern crystal practice.

Black tourmaline, mineral name schorl, is a complex iron rich aluminium borosilicate crystallising in long striated prisms. It is pyroelectric and piezoelectric, generating a small electric charge under pressure or temperature change, a property known since the eighteenth century. In metaphysical tradition it is the standard stone of psychic protection and energetic grounding. Robert Simmons describes it as a portable energetic shield. Practitioners place it at the four corners of a room to create a protected space, carry it through crowded environments, and use it to offload the day at night.

Metaphysical Properties

Held to absorb and transmute negative energy from people, places, and electronics. It is associated with sealing the auric field and anchoring the user to the earth, creating a calm steady baseline.

In Love

Used to clear the residue of past relationships before opening to new love and to protect a current relationship from outside negativity.

In Healing

Folk associations include adrenal fatigue, stress, and chronic overstimulation. Often placed near beds of those who do not sleep well.

In Spirituality

A foundation stone for ritual circles, for entering meditation safely, and for psychic work. Considered necessary before any opening practice that risks energetic exposure.

Chakras: Root.

Tarot Connection

Black tourmaline pairs with the Devil card, supporting the user to break unhealthy bonds and to refuse manipulation. It is also called upon with the Nine of Wands, the card of weary but watchful defence.
