Also called heliotrope, a green chalcedony with red flecks, traditionally a stone of courage and physical vitality.

Bloodstone is a variety of chalcedony, a microcrystalline quartz, with characteristic red spots of iron oxide. The classic name heliotrope means turning of the sun, from the way it was thought to redden water under sunlight. In Christian tradition the red spots were said to be the blood of Christ at the crucifixion, and bloodstone was used in carved seals throughout the medieval and Renaissance periods. Pliny the Elder mentions it as a stone of warriors and athletes. Metaphysically it is a stone of physical courage, vitality, and the willingness to bleed for what matters. It supports recovery, endurance, and the integrity of the body.
