The yellow variety of quartz, traditionally called the merchant stone for its association with success and confidence.

Citrine is a quartz coloured by ferric iron, ranging from soft champagne to deep madeira. Genuine natural citrine is comparatively rare and most commercial citrine is heat treated amethyst, which produces a more saturated orange yellow. Both are considered effective in tradition, although purists prefer the natural Brazilian, Russian, or Congolese material. Citrine has been associated with wealth and success since at least ancient Greek and Roman times, when it was carved into intaglios. It is sometimes called the merchant stone because shopkeepers traditionally placed a piece in the till.
