Clear quartz is silicon dioxide, SiO2, the most abundant mineral on the earth crust. It is piezoelectric and pyroelectric, and the basis of modern timekeeping in the quartz watch. Pure clear specimens are often called rock crystal. Across cultures it has been used for divination, scrying, and as a focus for healers. Robert Simmons calls it the universal crystal because of its capacity to amplify, store, and direct intention. In modern practice it is the foundation stone, used to amplify any other crystal and to hold programmed intentions. Subtypes include Lemurian, Herkimer diamond, phantom, included, and Tibetan quartz, each with refined uses.
