Emerald is the green chromium and vanadium bearing variety of beryl, beryllium aluminium silicate. It has been treasured since the time of Cleopatra, who is recorded to have favoured Egyptian emeralds, and Mughal emperors who inscribed them with prayers. Mohs hardness is 7.5 to 8 but emeralds are typically included and brittle, hence careful handling. Metaphysically it has been called the stone of successful love by Judy Hall, signifying loyalty, friendship, and partnership built on truth. It is associated with the goddess Venus and with the planet Mercury in some Vedic traditions, where it is the gem of the planet Budha.
