Fluorite — Meaning & Properties

mental clarity · study · order · discernment · integration

Calcium fluoride, called the genius stone for its association with mental order and learning.

Fluorite is calcium fluoride, CaF2, often forming perfect cubic crystals and famously fluorescent under UV light, the property that gave fluorescence its name. It comes in dramatic banded forms, especially the green and purple Chinese material and the rainbow English Blue John. It is soft, only Mohs 4, and has perfect octahedral cleavage, which means it splits easily. Metaphysically fluorite is treated as a stone of mental clarity and structured thinking. Judy Hall calls it the genius stone for its reputation in supporting study, complex problem solving, and the integration of new information. Different colours are used for different mental functions.
