Jade — Meaning & Properties

harmony · virtue · longevity · wisdom · prosperity

A traditional Chinese stone of virtue, harmony, and steady prosperity, comprising two distinct minerals, jadeite and nephrite.

The name jade covers two minerals, jadeite, a sodium aluminium pyroxene, and nephrite, a calcium magnesium amphibole. Imperial jade is a fine emerald green jadeite from Burma. Nephrite, slightly softer and tougher, is the historic Chinese jade and is also found from New Zealand to Wyoming. Jade has been carved for over seven thousand years and in Confucian thought it represented the eleven virtues. Modern metaphysical practice retains jade as the stone of harmony, purity, and quiet abundance. It is given at births, weddings, and milestones across Chinese culture and is considered protective of children.
