A fossilised wood and one of the oldest mourning and protection stones in European tradition.

Jet is not a true mineral but a form of lignite, fossilised wood from the Jurassic period, hard enough to take a polish. The Whitby jet of Yorkshire was famous from Roman times and again in Victorian mourning jewellery. It is light, warm to the touch, and electrostatic when rubbed. Pliny the Elder mentions it as a charm against snakes and the evil eye. In folk practice across Europe it is paired with amber, the male and female amulet pair, jet for protection and amber for warmth. Modern witchcraft retains jet as a primary stone of psychic shielding and grief support.

Metaphysical Properties

Held to absorb dense emotion, particularly grief and fear, and to shield the wearer from psychic attack. Considered a strongly absorbent stone that requires regular cleansing.

Used after bereavement and during long separations. Considered a stone for keeping faithful through difficulty.

Folk uses include migraines, depression, and stomach pain. Most strongly associated with grief work and with helping the bereaved sleep.
