Labradorite is a plagioclase feldspar discovered in 1770 in Labrador, Canada, where it remains a major source. The aurora like flash, called labradorescence, is caused by light scattering at lamellar twin planes within the crystal. Inuit tradition holds that labradorite is the frozen fire of the aurora borealis, released when a warrior struck a piece with a spear. In modern metaphysical practice it is treated as the stone of magic and the magician, used to access deeper layers of consciousness, to develop psychic ability, and to recognise destiny. It has a more enigmatic temperament than moonstone, more visionary and less domestic.
