A rock of lazurite, calcite, and pyrite, the celebrated royal blue stone of pharaohs, philosophers, and esoteric tradition.

Lapis lazuli is a metamorphic rock, not a single mineral, composed mainly of lazurite with calcite and pyrite. The finest lapis still comes from the Sar e Sang mines of Afghanistan, in continuous use for at least seven thousand years. It was used in the burial mask of Tutankhamun and ground into the precious pigment ultramarine. Metaphysically it has been called the stone of truth, of inner kingship, and of the celestial wisdom. It is a stone of philosophers more than scholars, of inner knowing rather than information. Many traditions reserve it for spiritual leadership and the courage to speak the deeper truth.
