A potassium feldspar of the orthoclase family, named for the soft moonlike sheen called adularescence.

Moonstone is a sodium potassium aluminium silicate of the feldspar family, with thin alternating layers of orthoclase and albite that scatter light to produce the characteristic floating glow called adularescence. The finest blue sheen moonstone comes from Sri Lanka and southern India. Rainbow moonstone, technically white labradorite, comes from Madagascar and India. In Indian tradition it is the sacred stone of Chandra, the moon, and is associated with goddesses across cultures, from Diana to Selene to Isis. Metaphysically it is the canonical feminine stone, used for cycles, intuition, dream work, and the deep wisdom of the body.
