A hydrated silica mineraloid prized for play of colour, traditionally a stone of imagination and emotional truth.

Opal is hydrated silica, SiO2 nH2O, an amorphous mineraloid, not a true crystal. Precious opal contains ordered spheres of silica that diffract light to produce play of colour. Australian black, white, and crystal opals dominate the market, with Ethiopian Welo material and Mexican fire opal also prominent. Roman writers called it the queen of gems for its rainbow within. In medieval Europe superstitions briefly turned against opal, partly because it was rumoured unlucky for those not born in October, a superstition with no real tradition behind it. Metaphysically opal is the stone of amplified emotion, imagination, and the mirroring of the inner state. Robert Simmons calls it a stone that intensifies what one already is.
