Pyrite is iron disulphide, FeS2, often forming perfect cubic or octahedral crystals. The name comes from the Greek pyr, fire, because it sparks when struck against steel. It was used as a fire starter long before flint. Spanish miners called it fools gold because of its colour, though it is denser and harder than real gold.
