Selenite — Meaning & Properties

A gypsum mineral, soft at Mohs 2 and water soluble, traditionally linked to mental clarity and Crown chakra activation.

Selenite is a variety of gypsum, hydrated calcium sulphate, named for the Greek goddess of the moon, Selene. It is very soft, only Mohs 2, and dissolves slowly in water. It commonly forms long satin spar wands or large cathedral plates. The famous Cave of the Crystals at Naica in Mexico contains gypsum crystals up to twelve metres long. In modern metaphysical practice selenite is treated as a primary stone of the crown chakra and as a cleanser for other crystals. It is described by Robert Simmons as a stone of liquid light, holding a clean bright field. It does not need cleansing in the traditional sense and is often used to cleanse other stones.
