Turquoise — Meaning & Properties
protection · truth · master healer · unity · sky
A hydrated copper aluminium phosphate, sacred across Native American, Persian, and Tibetan traditions as a stone of protection, health, and truth.
Turquoise is a hydrated copper and aluminium phosphate, copper giving the blue, iron the green. It is one of the oldest known gemstones, used by Egyptians, Persians, Aztecs, Tibetans, and the Pueblo and Navajo peoples. The name comes from Old French Turquoise meaning Turkish, because it reached Europe through Turkey from Persian mines. Persian sky blue, Sleeping Beauty, and Kingman are well known sources. Metaphysically it is a stone of protection, healing, and truthful speech. Many traditions consider it a master healer that links heaven, earth, and the human throat. It changes colour with body chemistry and time, considered evidence of its sympathy with the wearer.
