Deck — Definition

A tarot deck is a working tool, not just a printed set of cards. Readers often have a deck they have shuffled into their own rhythm — the back of the cards softens, the imagery becomes familiar, and the deck starts to "speak" in the reader's own vocabulary. The Rider–Waite–Smith deck (1909) is the most widely used reference deck; the Thoth deck and Marseille deck represent two other major traditions. Decks are personal, and most serious readers keep more than one.
